Whether your story is original or fanfiction, please be kind and give these rules a once over.
FOR ORIGINAL WORKS
As the name suggests, your story must be 100% ORIGINAL. Using copyrighted work with the intention of passing it off as your own is a very serious offense, and will not be tolerated here.
Please keep the content somewhat family-friendly. Post a rating of your story in the title (Example: MY STORY (PG13--Excessive swearing/violence))
No NC-17 stuff, guys. This isn't the place for smut.
Try to limit your posts to 60000 words. If it is longer than that, a double post may be permitted to continue your story
FOR FANFICTION
See the above rules for original works as well.
In your title, please post what fandom your story is for along with the rating.
While your story may be fanfiction, that does not mean you can copy/paste an entire novel and say it is your work because you added a character or something. That's a big no-no.
Also, before your story please place a disclaimer stating that you do not own the work your fanfiction is based off unless you have confirmed permission from the copyrighted author to use their work in your story.
SOME GENERAL WRITING TIPS
Before submitting, please run your piece through a spelling and grammar check, or if your word processor does not have that function, send it to a "beta" (proofreader) for a once-over. It is easier for people to read your work if it has correct spelling/grammar/punctuation.
Collab pieces are more than welcome here as long as all authors get credit.
If you would like feedback on your work, please let us know :3
TIPS FOR GIVING/RECEIVING FEEDBACK
With the above statement being said, I believe it is only fair that I offer some pointers for giving and getting criticism. I know that it is not the easiest thing to swallow but seeing as you have placed your writing on a public forum someone is bound to tell you what they think about it.
Not everyone who reads your story is going to stroke your ego. Some writers out there genuinely want to help you cultivate your skill and will tell you some about areas in your story that need improvement.
That being said, there is a large difference between constructive criticism and flaming.
This is an example of constructive criticism: Hey, I looked over your story. I think (insert part of story here) is really awesome but (blah), (blah), and (blah) need a little improvement. (the reviewer then explains how those areas could be improved)
Granted, the reviewer may not always be as gentle as the above example, but if the post is similar to this, then it is constructive criticism and there is no need to report it.
This is an example of flaming: HEY I READ THIS PIECE OF CRAP AND IT SUKS YOU CAN'T WRITE FOR **** YOU ****ING PIECE OF ***** *** ******!!!!11!!
As stated before, the cases may vary but posts along this line are considered flaming/trolling and should be brought to a staff member's attention immediately.
When giving reviews, please take into consideration the fact that the writer you are reviewing has actual feelings and has worked very hard on their story. While it is understandable that you are trying to help them improve, please try to go about critiquing their work in a somewhat pleasant manner.
If you have taken the time to read these rules (as you should ), then you shouldn't encounter any problems when posting your works. The main point of this thread is for you to show off your skills and improve them (if you need/want to!).
Happy Writing,
Tonks
